Road System in Siem Reap

"If you could change one important thing about your hometown, what would you change? Use reasons and specific example to support your answer."
What would you change?

Siem Reap is one of the second poorest provinces in Cambodia, and I live here as a Cambodian. Siem Reap is not as developed as other provinces in Cambodia. The roads bridges sewage system and other infrastructures are not in a good condition. The road system in Siem Reap is not organized enough, which causes a lot of accidents. They are badly damaged, which makes it hard to drive. There is so much confusion about the lanes for bicycles, motorbikes and cars. I would therefore change the road system in Siem Reap because better roads would make it easier and safer to drive.

First, better roads would make it easier to drive in Siem Reap. Present day roads are tiny, dusty and with no lane marking for small vehicles and large vehicles. Also so, on the sidewalks, there is no space to walk at all. The traffic is terrible because of confusion about lanes. Drivers never stay in their lanes, and drive all over the road. This is because lanes are not designated specially for different types of vehicles. If there were separate lanes for cars, motorbikes and bicycles, this would make it easier for all drivers and pedestrians to avoid accidents. Traffic jams would less if people drove in their own lane, and the road would look more organized. Drivers would stay in their lanes and would be more response about their driving. All roads need to be bigger, have sidewalks and specific lanes. Better roads would therefore make it easier to drive in Siem Reap.

Next, better roads would also make it safer for all drivers since roads have been made from poor quality materials, they have been damaged easily by over-weight trucks. Those trucks have so much weigh that the road cannot support them. If you drive along any main road in the city, at least every 500 meters, you will see potholes or some kind of other damage. The roads are of poor quality, and they last less than three years. They need to be fixed according to international standards by professional engineers. In addition, the government has to hire these engineers who have work experience and are certified to build roads. This would guarantee the quality of Siem Reap roads. If the roads were paved properly, it would make it safer for all drivers.

In conclusion, I would change the road system because better roads would make it easier and safer to drive. If there were separate lanes for cars, motorbikes and bicycles, this would make it easier for all drivers and pedestrians to avoid accidents. Furthermore, if the roads were paved, it would make it safer for all drivers. The governor of Siem Reap must make efforts to make better roads for all drivers to ensure safety. Written April.19.2016
